Norbar Case Study
Remote Valve Torque Improves Pipeline Safety for APA Group
Introduction
APA Group partnered with Norbar Australia to implement a remote-operated torque solution that improves safety and control during pipeline venting operations.
The custom system enables operators to actuate high-pressure gas venting valves from up to 50 metres away, reducing exposure to risk while maintaining precise torque control.
The Challenge
APA Group operates critical gas transmission infrastructure across Australia, where safety and reliability are paramount.
Emergency venting valves were traditionally operated manually, requiring personnel to work in close proximity to pressurised assets. This presented safety risks, increased physical strain, and limited flexibility during venting procedures.
APA Group required a solution that would:
Allow valves to be operated from a safe distance
Reduce manual handling and operator exposure
Deliver reliable, repeatable torque in demanding field conditions

APA remote torque application
The Solution
Norbar Australia engineered a custom Pipeline Venting Valve Kit based on the PTS REMOTE-500 torque system.
The solution combines long-distance torque transmission with purpose-designed mechanical interfaces, allowing safe and controlled valve actuation without direct operator contact.
Key system elements
PTS REMOTE-500 for accurate torque delivery over extended hose lengths
Remote pendant and lubrication system, modified for ergonomic operation
Custom reaction arm assembly, designed to locate securely within the valve flange
Custom-machined octagon socket, matched precisely to APA Group’s valve design
Each component was engineered to work as an integrated system, ensuring stability, accuracy, and ease of deployment.
Engineering and delivery
The project was delivered by Norbar Australia’s in-house engineering team and assembled at the Brisbane workshop.
Close collaboration with APA Group ensured the system met operational requirements and could be deployed confidently across multiple pipeline sites. The final kits were tested to confirm consistent torque output and safe remote operation prior to delivery.
Results
The remote valve torque system has delivered measurable safety and operational benefits, including:
Safe valve operation from up to 50 metres away
Reduced manual handling and operator exposure
Faster, more controlled venting procedures
A scalable solution adaptable to different valve configurations
The concept has since been extended to additional sites using alternative hose lengths and component variations.
